MindHouse Book Club has legs!
It's our 9th meeting ... the 7th and 8th were "mini MindHouse Book Club meetings: pictures below.
Dennis, Gretchen, Jim, Sue, Robyn, Melissa and Doug
Books: The Rosie Project by Graeme C. Simsion and Mindset by Carol Dweck
Place: Jim and Sue's office on Bestgate in Annapolis on January 23, 2015
The Rosie Project: Laugh out loud book that everyone liked. Basic plot was a misunderstanding between a genetics professor with Asperger's syndrome and a loosely brilliant psychology graduate student who was trying to find her father. Set in Australia.
This is a serious group that reads serious books (sometimes). Mindset seemed a little too fixed: one had either a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. The first was bad, the latter good. Melissa commented that Dweck's treatise was "cognitized" and left out the socio/emotional component. Robyn found it a little repetitive. Jim wanted more practical and humanized examples. Doug got all "ginned up" by the one dimensionality of fitting everything into two boxes. Everyone liked the idea of getting "all ginned up" although there was only wine and beer on the table.
This is a serious group that eats chocolates and looks at pictures of Robyn's new puppy and puppy vomit (not shown here for reasons of dignity and civility). Dennis talked about a mindset that allows one to achieve and exceed one's expectations created by artificial barriers. Melissa read a beautiful poem that she wrote in the style of Dr. Zeuss: "Roll Real" ... we want more Melissa!
